No. 21 Pacific Completes Second Day of Tournament

IRVINE, Calif. - The No. 21 Pacific women's water polo team (2-10) dropped both matches on day two of the Barbara Kalbus Invitational, falling to No. 7 Cal and No. 12 Long Beach State on Saturday afternoon.

Game One- No. 7 Cal 15, No. 21 Pacific 4
 
  • Kicking off the match in style, sophomore Toula Falvey netted the first goal of the contest on an assist from fellow sophomore Lucy Davis at the 5:28 mark in the opening period.
  • Following four straight goals from the Golden Bears, Pacific trailed Cal, 4-1, at the end of the first quarter.
  • Aiming to begin the comeback, sophomore Brianna Utas scored her first of the afternoon at 6:49 in the second period, cutting the Tiger deficit to just two (4-2).
  • Although Falvey would find the back of the cage for the second time on another assist from Davis at 3:59, UOP headed into the locker room down 7-3 at halftime.
  • Coming out of the break, Davis netted her lone goal of the match on an assist from junior Natalie Hosmer less than two minutes into the third period.
  • Unfortunately, the Tigers still trailed the Golden Bears at the end of three, 9-4.
  • Unable to piece together momentum, Pacific did not score in the final frame of the match as the Tigers scored six goals in the final period to secure the 15-4 victory.
 
Game Two- No. 12 Long Beach State 12, No. 21 Pacific 7
  • Helping the Tigers just out to an early 2-0 lead, junior Brooke Contreras and Utas scored the opening goals of the match at 7:33 and 4:11 in the first period.
  • Despite the pressure, Long Beach State would counter with three goals to end the quarter, taking a 3-2 advantage over Pacific heading into the second.
  • Continuing to deliver when called upon, Falvey netted her first of the match on an assist from Utas at 4:58 in the second period.
  • Closing out the half, Utas scored her second of the contest on an assist from Davis with 1:08 remaining.
  • At the half, Pacific was on the heels of the 49ers, trailing 5-4.
  • Netting her 17th overall goal of the season, Savannah Fitzgerald found the back of the cage for the first goal of the third period, tying the game at five.
  • However, LBSU responded with two goals to end the quarter, holding a 7-5 advantage moving into the final frame.
  • Hitting their stride, Long Beach State opened the period with four straight goals before Falvey scored Pacific's final point of the match on an assist from Davis with 3:34 left on the clock.
  • Ultimately, the Tigers were outlasted by the 49ers with a final score of 12-7.

Pacific will close out play at the Barbara Kalbus Invitational with a showdown against No. 15 UC Davis in a rematch of last Sunday's contest in Davis (L, 12-7). The match is set for 9:00 am at the Anteater Aquatics Center in Irvine, Calif. Live stats will be available on pacifictigers.com.
