Pacific Can't Complete Comeback in Series Opener

STOCKTON, Calif. – The Pacific baseball team (3-2) dropped the opening game of their weekend series against South Dakota State (1-3), 2-1, on Friday night at Klein Family Field.

Locked in a pitcher's duel all evening, the Tigers could not find the timely hitting to drive home runners on base, tallying just four total hits on the night.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • Setting down the Jackrabbits in order in the top of the first, Pacific notched their first hit of the game on a line drive into left field by junior Charles Middleton in the home half of the inning.
  • Finding his groove early on, junior Lucas Sweany faced the minimum through four innings on the mound.
  • After walks by sophomore Ben Nemivant and junior Luke Price in the bottom of the fourth, the Tigers struck first on a wild pitch by the Jackrabbits as Nemivant sprinted home to give UOP the 1-0 lead.
  • Following another scoreless inning by Sweany, Pacific led South Dakota State, 1-0, after five innings of play.
  • Unfortunately, a few hiccups in the top of the sixth saw manager Chris Rodriguez turn the ball over to junior Henrik Reintersen with no outs and two runners on base. Ultimately, the Jackrabbits would cash in to take a 2-1 advantage heading into the bottom of the sixth.
  • Looking to find their momentum at the plate, the Tigers struggled through their final four opportunities in the box, recording just two hits in the final four innings.
  • Closing out the contest for their first victory of the season, Bret Barnett shut the door on Pacific in the bottom of the ninth as the Jackrabbits held on to take down UOP, 2-1.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • As the only Tiger with two hits, Middleton was named the City of Stockton Human Resources Hardworking Player of the Game after finishing 2-for-4 at the plate with two singles.
  • Turning in a quality performance on the bump, Lucas Sweany tallied a final line of 5.0+ IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, and 4 strikeouts.
  • Providing depth out of the bullpen, Reinertsen, senior Keatonn Glover, junior Landon Curtis and senior Joseph Standley Jr. combined for four scoreless innings of relief, allowing only two total hits.
  • Working the count throughout the night, the Tigers notched six walks against the South Dakota State pitching staff.
