UOP Drops Game Two to Lancers

STOCKTON, Calif. – After tallying their first win of the season on Opening Night, the Pacific baseball team (1-1) struggled to find their same offensive rhythm from Friday evening as the Tigers fell to California Baptist (1-1), 5-1, in game two of the four-game series.

Unable to string together enough hits to rally back against the Lancers, UOP scored their lone run of the contest in the seventh inning as CBU notched their first victory of the year.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • Following in the footsteps of Friday night's winner, Lucas Sweany, sophomore Elijah Birdsong allowed just one hit in the first inning before retiring the Lancers in the opening frame.
  • Unfortunately, CBU struck first on an RBI single by senior Andrew Jurado in the top of the second to take an early 1-0 lead.
  • Looking to plate their first run of the afternoon, the Tigers did not record their first hit of the game until a single by sophomore Jeremy Lea in the bottom of the third.
  • Heating up in the box, the Lancers tacked on one run in the top of the fourth and two more just an inning later to take a 4-0 advantage heading into the home half of fifth.
  • In the sixth, CBU increased their lead to five runs on an RBI double from junior Russell Stevenson.
  • Getting on the board, the Tigers scored their lone run of the game on a passed in the bottom of the seventh as senior Carter Hayes scored to cut the Lancer lead to four, 5-1.
  • Despite a pinch-hit appearance by sophomore Ben Nemivant in the bottom of the eighth, Pacific could not find enough momentum in the final innings as UOP was defeated by California Baptist, 5-1, on Saturday afternoon.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Although he would allow three runs, Birdsong notched 7 total strikeouts in 4.0 innings of work while allowing just two free passes to the Lancers.
  • Starting for his first time in the Orange and Black, freshman Thomas Gavello recorded the first hit of his collegiate career on a single to centerfield in the bottom of the seventh.
  • Impressing just like Gavello, freshman left-hander Grant Stevens tallied his first strikeout on the mound in the seventh inning as well. It was also Stevens' first punchout as a Tiger.
  • Providing consistency throughout the lineup, sophomore James Arakawa and junior Alex LeForestier both extended their hitting streak to two games despite the loss.
UP NEXT:
Game 3 of Opening Weekend will see the Lancers return to Klein Family Field as Pacific aims to get back in the win column on Sunday, Feb. 16. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 pm. Christian Culpepper (RHP) and Hayden Pearce (RHP) are scheduled to take the mound for CBU and UOP respectively. The contest will be broadcast live at game time on the WCC Network.
