STOCKTON, Calif. – The Pacific softball team (3-3, 0-0 WCC) was on the cusp of a 4-1 start, but gave up a late hit and then struggled in quality battles with Seattle U and CSUN on Friday's first day of the Libby Matson Tournament at Bill Simoni Field in Stockton.
Game 1: Seattle 4, Pacific 3
- Pacific went down early in a 2-0 hole, but it was a short-lived lead for the Redhawks thanks to a two-run RBI single from Caitlyn Sung in the third inning that scored Megan Wachholtz. Pacific's game-tying inning began with Talli Shepherd being hit by a pitch.
- Bethany Hammer set a new career high with 10 strikeouts against the Redhawks.
- Seattle put a runner on third in the sixth inning after managing a hit for the first time since the third inning, but Shepherd made the heads-up play to throw home and nab the runner, ending the inning and preserving Pacific's 3-2 lead.
- Hammer was in prime position for the complete-game win, but Seattle capitalized on a two-out, two-run double to left field though to take a 4-3 lead in the seventh inning.
Game 2: CSUN 3, Pacific 0
- Madison Kahwaty started the bottom of the first with a leadoff single, but CSUN escaped the jam in a game that proved to be defensive from the get-go. The sophomore went 2 for 3 from the plate with a pair of singles against the Matadors.
- Myka Sutherlin started in the circle for the Tyges, having already recorded strikeout number four to end the Matadors' away half of the second inning.
- CSUN threatened to extend its lead in the fourth, but Pacific held the Matadors scoreless with the bases loaded to escape the jam.
WHAT COACH KOLZE SAID
"Tough day today. We played two really good teams and had great pitching from both (Bethany) Hammer and Myka (Sutherlin) to keep us in the games. We just didn't execute enough at the plate, so hopefully that's something we can clean up tomorrow."
