STOCKTON, Calif. – The Pacific baseball team (1-0) rang in the new season with a 9-5 victory over California Baptist (0-1) on Friday night at Klein Family Field.
Kicking off his season with a bang,
Chris Rodriguez recorded his first victory at the Division I level with his first win as head coach of the Tigers.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
- Settling in early, junior Lucas Sweany retired the first three batters of the game as the Tigers turned away the Lancer attacked in the bottom of the first.
- Finding their rhythm early on, senior Luke Price drove in his first run as a Tiger on an RBI double in the bottom the second, scoring fellow senior Carter Hayes to give Pacific the early 1-0 lead. Next up, sophomore Jeremy Lea knocked in his first RBI of the year on a sacrifice fly to centerfield, extending the advantage to 2-0 for UOP through two innings of play.
- Following three straight innings that saw Sweany not allow a hit to CBU, Pacific jumped out to a comfortable lead 5-0 lead after junior Charles Middleton, Hayes and Price sparked an offensive rally for the Tigers in the bottom of the fifth.
- Tacking on more runs to blow the contest open, Middleton blasted his second double of the night in the home half of the sixth, plating sophomore James Arakawa and junior James McClenaghan.
- Despite allowing the first two Lancers to reach base in the top of the seventh, Sweany exited the game having not allowed a run, turning the ball over to junior Henrik Reinertsen with a 7-0 lead.
- Allow CBU would get on the board with three runs of their own, the Tigers responded with two more runs in the bottom of the seventh on RBI singles from McClenaghan and Middleton, making the score 9-3 in favor of UOP.
- Ultimately, the Lancers added two more to the run column in the top of the eighth, but could not piece together enough hits to come back as junior Landon Curtis and senior Keaton Glover shut down CBU to close out the game.
- Pacific defeated California Baptist by a final score of 9-5 to secure their first win of the 2020 campaign.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
- Junior Charles Middleton Jr. was named the City of Stockton Human Resources Hardworking Player of the Game after notching 3 hits, 4 RBI's and 1 run scored.
- Setting up the framework for the W, Sweany finished with a final line of 6+ innings pitched, 5 strikeouts, 4 hits, 2 earned runs and just one walk as he cruised to his first victory of the year.
- Bringing his talents to Stockton, Price impressed in his first start in the Orange and Black by driving in two runs on two hits against the Lancers.
- Beginning the season with a resilient hitting performance, seven of the nine Tiger starters recorded at least one in the game, combining for 11 total on the night.
UP NEXT: Pacific will continue opening weekend at Klein Family Field with the second game of the series on Saturday, Feb. 15. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 pm. Bryan Pope (CBU) and
Elijah Birdsong (PAC) are the probable starting pitchers for the matchup. The contest will be broadcast live at game time on the WCC Network.
