Pacific Squeezes Past UNLV in Double OT

Box Score LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Fresh off their first win of the new season, the Pacific women's basketball team notched their second victory in as many days in thrilling fashion, squeezing past host UNLV in double overtime, 77-75 at the Thomas & Mack Center on Sunday afternoon.

Sweeping their two games in the Duel in the Desert tournament, the Tigers secured the win when senior Brooklyn McDavid cleaned up a missed three-pointer by sophomore Sam Ashby and used her body to lay home the winning basket with just over 3 seconds remaining on the game clock in the second overtime period.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • Continuing her strong start to her senior campaign, Lianna Tillman got the Tigers on the board with her first triple of the afternoon at 8:45 in the opening quarter, giving Pacific the early 3-0 lead.
  • Battling out of the gates, the Lady Rebels would find their groove offensively quickly thereafter, but the Tigers stayed within striking distance throughout the first, trailing 17-11 heading into the second quarter.
  • Displaying her potential, redshirt freshman Rosie Schweizer nailed the game-tying three at the 7:46 mark in the second to knot the score at 19.
  • Following two more threes from Tillman and a few more baskets down the stretch from the Tigers, Pacific headed into the locker room up three over the Lady Rebels, 33-29.
  • Showcasing her talent, Higgins netted five straight points for the Tigers midway through the third as UOP maintained their advantage over UNLV, 42-35, at 6:28.
  • Hitting their stride, Pacific would lead by double digits, 54-44, at the end of three.
  • In the fourth quarter, the Lady Rebels would catch fire from the field while also stifling the Tigers on the defensive end, tying the game at 60 on a layup by Delaynie Byrne with :22 remaining in regulation.
  • Despite one last effort from Higgins with four seconds left, Pacific and UNLV would need two overtime periods to determine a winner.
  • In the first overtime period, UNLV regained the lead just 40 seconds in, but the Tigers fought back to ultimately tie the contest again and force a second overtime on a three by Schweizer with 1:18 on the clock. Heading into the final frame, the score remained even at 67.
  • Trading buckets, Pacific did not take their final lead until the put back layup by McDavid with just over 3 seconds remaining on the clock.
  • With the Lady Rebels unable to get off one last attempt before the final buzzer, the Tigers hung on to defeat the hosts, 77-75, for their first victory over UNLV in Las Vegas since Jan. 7, 1996.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Making an early case for Player of the Year, Higgins dominated her opponent yet again, finishing with 24 points, 11 rebounds, 8 steals and 4 assists. Impressively, the redshirt senior shot 10-of-13 overall from the free throw line in 39 total minutes.
  • Enjoying her best performance as a Tiger, Schweizer totaled a career-high 21 points and 8 rebounds in 32 minutes off the bench for the Tigers.
  • Adding their own efforts, Tillman (11) and McDavid (10) also each finished in double figures. Overall, McDavid finished just one rebound shy (9) of a double-double while Tillman recorded at least 3 assists for the third consecutive game.
  • As a team, the Tigers led the Lady Rebels in four categories: points in the paint (38-30), second chance points (17-12), points off turnovers (17-14) and bench points (25-6).
