Box Score STOCKTON, Calif. – After multiple postponements and cancellations in the opening weeks of the college basketball season, the Pacific women's basketball team finally got to compete for the first time since March 7, but ultimately fell to No. 1 Stanford, 104-61, on opening night at the Spanos Center.
With the victory, Cardinal head coach Tara VanDerveer became the all-time winningest coach in NCAA Division I women's basketball history, surpassing the iconic Pat Summit for win number 1,099.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
- Getting the Tigers on the board, senior Lianna Tillman tallied the first bucket of the season for Pacific at the 9:11 mark in the first quarter, cutting the early Stanford lead to 4-2.
- With 3:46 remaining in the first period, redshirt freshman Rosie Schweizer notched her first points in the Orange & Black as Pacific remained within striking distance of Stanford, 17-10.
- At the end of the first, the Cardinal held a 26-12 advantage, but five different Tigers scored in the opening frame (Tillman, Schweizer, Josephine Millard, Brooklyn McDavid and Savannah Whitehead)
- Keeping pace with the nation's top ranked team, Pacific trailed by just seven points after back-to-back threes from Tillman and redshirt junior Jordan Cruz around the midpoint of the second quarter.
- Aiming to pull off the upset, the Tigers headed into the locker room only down by eleven at the halftime break, 43-32.
- Converting from the stripe, Pacific knocked down three-of-four from the free throw in the first 1:10 of the second half, staying with range of the Cardinal, 49-35.
- Following a strong third period from the visitors, UOP trailed Stanford, 79-47, heading into the final frame.
- Showing her range from deep, Tillman nailed her third from behind-the-arc at 6:57 in the fourth quarter, trimming the Cardinal lead to 89-52.
- Despite a few final baskets from the Tigers down the stretch, Stanford would hold onto their advantage throughout the rest of the contest, securing the victory and the all-time wins record for coach VanDerveer by a final score of 104-61.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
- Having not logged official game minutes in 282 calendar days, the Tigers enjoyed a promising showing offensively, as Tillman (15), McDavid (14) and Higgins (10) all finished in double figures while also shooting 39.7 percent overall as a team.
- Proving her versatility, Higgins also impressed by adding 5 assists, 4 rebounds, 2 steals and one block in 30 minutes of action.
- Shining in her first appearance as a Tiger, Schweizer recorded 7 points and grabbed a team-high 6 boards in her debut for Pacific.
- On the defensive end, Higgins, Schweizer and Tillman all collected two steals apiece, with Millard also tallying one of her own.

Making their first road trip of the season, the Tigers will travel to Las Vegas this upcoming weekend as they will compete in the Duel in the Desert. Hosted by UNLV, Pacific will face off against LSU on Saturday, Dec. 19 at 1:00 pm in their first game of the tournament. Following this matchup, UOP will meet the host Rebels on Sunday, Dec. 20 at 3:30 pm. All games will be PST and will take place at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas.
