ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The No. 11 Pacific women's water polo team (2-3) finished off play at the Michigan Invitational with tough losses to Michigan and Indiana at the tournament's final day inside the Canham Natatorium in Ann Arbor.
NO. 7 MICHIGAN 7, NO. 11 PACIFIC 4
First Half-
- Coming out of the gates firing, junior Brooke Contreras netted the first goal of the match at the 4:54 mark in the first period to give Pacific an early 1-0 lead.
- Less than a minute later, sophomore Brianna Utas scored her first of the day on a power play opportunity, extending the Tiger lead to 2-0.
- Unfortunately, the Wolverines would counter with two goals of their own in the following minutes as UOP was tied with Michigan 2-2 at the end of the opening frame.
- Despite another goal by the Wolverines to begin the second period, Pacific tied the match on Utas' second of the contest at the 3:44 mark.
- Unable to find consistency on the defensive end, Michigan tacked on two more goals before the end of the half as UOP headed into the locker room trailing 5-3.
Second Half-
- Looking to close the gap, the Tigers cut their deficit to just one at Utas notched her first hat trick of the year at the 7:02 mark in the third period.
- Using their home pool to their advantage, the Wolverines found the back of the cage at 2:13 and 1:30 to take a 7-4 lead at the end of the third period.
- Struggling to find momentum on the offensive end, Pacific would not score in the fourth and final period.
- Ultimately, No. 11 Pacific was defeated by No. 7 Michigan by a final score of 7-4.
NO. 13 INDIANA 13, NO. 11 PACIFIC 5
First Half-
- Pacific went down 2-0 quickly and called time at the 4:36 mark of the first period
- Savannah Fitzgerald got the Tigers on the board first out of the timeout off an assist from Lucy Davis. FItzgerald led the Tigers against Indiana with two goals.
- Shots were 13-7 Indiana after one as Contreras and Utas led Pacific with two apiece after a period.
- Pacific pulled a couple goals back in the second period, beginning with Fitzgerald scoring just over a minute into the second period to bring the momentum back to Pacific's side and make it a one-goal game at 3-2.
- Indiana called time with 3:35 remaining in the second period, only to score back-to-back goals in a span of 27 seconds to take a 5-2 lead.
- Davis notched her first goal of the match to cut Indiana's lead to 5-3 before the Hoosiers botched a golden opportunity with a missed penalty shot.
- The Tigers caught up offensively in the first half, trailing the Hoosiers in shots just 20-15 after 16 minutes of action.
Second Half-
- Indiana struck first twice out of the halftime break in a matter of 43 seconds to quickly extend its lead to 7-3.
- Toula Falvey converted to cut the lead to 7-4, but Indiana punched back 17 seconds later with an even strength goal of their own.
- Natalie Hosmer scored at the 4:30 mark of the third period on Brianna Utas' second assist of the match to pull Pacific within 8-5.
- Pacific was awarded a penalty shot at the end of the third period, but Ana Martinez do Amaral's attempt was saved.
- Fitzgerald and Falvey hit the post on back-to-back shot attempts in the fourth period with a save from Samantha Pfaff sandwiched in between to spur a Pacific timeout.
- The Hoosiers tacked on three more goals though in a span of a minute and a half to stretch the lead to 11-5, their largest of the day, adding two more to down Pacific 13-5.

Pacific Aquatics Center to host California in a 1:00 p.m. matchup on Saturday, February 8.
