Tigers Snag Overtime Victory Against San Jose State

STOCKTON, Calif. – In a very physical match, the Pacific men's soccer team edged visiting San Jose State, 2-1 in overtime on Thursday night at Knoles Field. 

The Tigers improve to 1-1-0 on the season, while the Spartans fall to 0-2-0.


In Case You Missed It

  • The Tigers struck first, scoring a goal on a penalty kick in the 18th minute. Tariq Branche slipped past two defenders and went one-on-one with the San Jose State keeper before being fouled in the box from behind. Taking the shot and scoring his first goal on the season was Andreas Charalambous.
  • At 39:43 Spartans' defender Jeff Dukes was dismissed from the contest after receiving a straight red card just outside of the box. 
  • Down a player, San Jose State was awarded a free kick from the top right of the box. Junior forward Rudolfo Castro scored the equalizer with less than two minutes remaining in the first half. 
  • San Jose State out-shot the Tigers 3-2 in the first 28 minutes of the second half. 
  • Pacific also went down a player after Johnatan Rico-Contreres was handed a red card at 72:54. 
  • The score remained tied at 1-1 through 90:00 of regulation, forcing a first overtime period.
  • Pacific needed just 3 minutes, 55 seconds to claim the 2-1 victory. Just over two minutes into overtime the Tigers took a corner kick. Off of the same play, Jonathan Jimenez took. shot, but his attempt was blocked by a Spartan defender. After regaining possession a little over a minute later (93:55), Anthony Orendain headed in a pass from Jose Angel Reyes for his first goal of the season.

Pacific will take nearly a week off before traveling to Corvallis, Ore. to face Oregon State. The Tigers are scheduled to face the Beavers on Monday, Sept. 9 at 7:00 p.m.
