LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The Pacific men's water polo team defeated the Loyola Marymount Lions, 19-11, to open play at the prestigious SoCal Invitational, which is being hosted on the campuses of LMU and UCLA.
The Tigers' record remains flawless as they improve to 7-0 on the season. The Lions fall to 3-6.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT
- Senior Luke Pavillard enjoyed his best performance thus far this season, totaling six goals and five assists for a total of 11 points. The Australia native finished six-for-six in shots on goal and also collected two steals in the match.
- Djordje Stanic contributed four goals and two assists for six points.
- Defensively speaking, Wyatt Barker came up with a team-leading three steals.
- As a team, Pacific finished 19-for-35 and scored on five-of-11 powerplays.
- Tiger keeper Jon Barry had seven saves en route to his seventh victory.
1st Period
- Pacific scored its first goal just 55 seconds in to the match on a toss by Engin Ege Colak.
- Three consecutive turnovers filled the next minute of play before Djordje Stanic and Matt Hosmer added the Tigers lead with goals at 5:58 and 5:22.
- Following an LMU timeout, Jon Barry came up with a save that then resulted in a Luke Pavillard goal at 4:49.
- The Lions put a goal on the board at the 3:21 mark.
- With just under three minutes left in the period, Rene Peralta came up with a steal and assisted on a Luke Pavillard goal to put the Tigers up 5-1.
- Hosmer scored his second goal at 2:08, but LMU answered back less than 20 seconds later to round out the first period scoring.
- Pacific outscored LMU, 6-2.
2nd Period
- For the second straight period, LMU was held to just two goals.
- Stanic scored his second goal of the game on a power play at 7:15.
- Just 30 seconds later Colak committed a penalty foul, which LMU converted for its third goal of the game.
- After taking an 8-3 lead, Pacific's defense held the Lions from scoring on consecutive powerplays.
- Hosmer and Stanic matched up again to score two straight goals for the Tigers, lifting Pacific to a 10-3 lead.
- LMU scored once more in the half at 2:40.
- Pacific out-shot LMU 3-1 in the final two minutes, but was unable to extend its lead further than 10-4 before halftime.
3rd Period
- The Tigers and Lions each had a goal within the first 38 seconds of the second half (11-5)
- LMU keeper Jon Lien came up with consecutive saves before Luke Pavillard stole the ball and dished it to Stanic for a goal at 4:57 (12-7).
- LMU put together its first multiple-score run at 4:41 and 4:00 to come back within five of the Tigers.
- Pavillard scored one final goal in the period off of an assist by Cote. Cote then extended the Tigers back to seven (14-7( with a final goal at 00:57.
4th Period
- Pacific led the scoring 5-4 in the final period.
- Freshman keeper Lewis Gale took over in goal for Jon Barry. Gale allowed three goals by the Lions.
- The Tigers final five goals were scored by four different players — Pavillard (2), Jay Halva, Peralta, and Bogdan Djerkovic.
UP NEXT
The Tigers will travel to UCLA for its match against USC at 12:00 p.m. After a win over Princeton on Friday afternoon, the Trojans enter Saturday's match with a 5-1 record.
