SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Sophomore
Philip Hjorth picked a signature singles win Saturday morning at the California Tennis Club's Battle in the Bay, downing TCU's Alastair Gray in straight sets. Gray entered the match as the No. 18 ranked player in the ITA Men's Singles rankings and the third seed in the Battle of the Bay.
The day started with Hjorth and
Ross Watson each squaring off in Round of 16 matches. Watson fell in straight sets to top seed Brandon Holt from USC 2-6, 3-6. Hjorth, meanwhile, plowed through to the Quarterfinal with a 6-3, 6-1 straight set upset Gray.
"It was a great win today," Hjorth said. "It showed the results of the work that has been put in the last few weeks with Coach Redondo and the team. I'm happy with the win and excited to use it as a spring board for the rest of the fall."
The sophomore took the first set in his Quarterfinal matchup against Stanford's Sangeet Sridhar before falling 1-6 in set two and dropping a narrow 4-6 final set.
"He took advantage of a huge opportunity and earned one of his better results in his career," Pacific head coach Ryan Redondo said. "It's just a start. I look forward to seeing him continue to progress, get more fit and gain more confidence."
