STOCKTON, Calif. – The Pacific men's soccer team (6-10-1, 3-4-0) fell to Gonzaga (4-10-2, 3-3-1), 2-0, in their final regular season match of 2019 on Saturday night at Knoles Field.
Honoring the team's six seniors before the match, the Tigers could not find any momentum on offense on a cold night in Stockton as the Bulldogs recorded their second shutout victory of the season.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
- Aiming to send the seniors out on the right note, Pacific fell victim to an early Gonzaga goal as Theo O'Malley scored on an assist from Isaiah Jackson at the 6:22 mark.
- Looking to use their home crowd to their advantage, the Tigers did not record their first shot of the match until 16:29, when senior Oliver Tate ripped a shot on goal that was ultimately saved by the Gonzaga goalie and Stockton native, Johan Garibay.
- Trading shots back and forth, seniors Anthony Orendain and Andreas Charalambous both recorded their first shots of the evening in the following minutes, but ultimately could not find the equalizer for UOP.
- As the half played on, seniors Tariq Branche and Johnatan Rico-Contreres also registered shots on the opposing goal, along with sophomores Mamoru Kamisasanuki, Ryan Her and freshman Derick Roque.
- The Tigers outshout the Bulldogs in the first half of play, 8-4, but headed into the locker room at the halftime break trailing 1-0.
- Coming out firing, sophomore Jose Angel Reyes tallied his lone shot on goal at the 47:15 mark, but was ultimately turned away by Garibay once again.
- Just a few minutes later, the Bulldogs extended their lead to 2-0 on O'Malley's second goal of the night at 58:24.
- Unfortunately, Pacific did not find another significant chance to score until the match was winding down. Lining up for what would be his final shot on goal as a Tiger, Charalambous barely missed the top left corner of the cage on a penalty kick at 89:14.
- Finishing out the final seconds, Gonzaga would hang on to defeat Pacific by a final score of 2-0. Despite the loss, senior Mateo Gomez recorded seven saves in his final game in Orange and Black.
- Overall, the Tigers finished the 2019 season with a 6-10-1, 3-4-0 record, putting them in sixth place in the final WCC men's soccer standings.
