TULSA, Okla. – Philip Hjorth,
Ross Watson and
Akram El Sallaly completed day three in Oklahoma at the ITA All-American Championships hosted by the University of Tulsa.
Hjorth advanced the farthest of the three, just missing out on a trip to the Pre-Qualifying Draw in the Round of 32. The loss however did not take away from what Tigers head coach Ryan Redondo called "an impressive run."
"He had some very good opponents in his draw and (Omaha's Matt) Hulme played a strong indoor match today that was deserving of the win," Redondo said. "Phil had opportunities but that's the way the ball bounces, especially when you are playing no-ad points. This was a great opportunity before the Regional Championships later this month."
Hjorth added that it was "a good two days with a lot of matches and a lot of learning."
"Being able to compete with the big schools and get wins against them is always a nice feeling to see where you are at," Hjorth said. "It's also nice to see how our training and routines match up against these schools and how the boys are able to compete at the highest level."
Philip Hjorth
- Hjorth started his day how he ended Saturday, with a resilient 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 victory in the Round of 64 over Georgia Tech's Marcus McDaniel at the Case Tennis Center in Tulsa.
- The sophomore saw the court just a few hours later, matching up with Hulme in a Round of 32 bout.
- Hjorth forced a third set with Hulme, but bowed out respectably to the tune of 6-7(4), 6-3, 5-7.
- It remains to be seen whether the Denmark native will receive a Lucky Loser spot in the event another player drops out of qualification.
Akram El Sallaly
- El Sallaly also competed at the Case Tennis Center, but dropped a 1-6, 4-6 decision to Ohio State's Tim Seibert in the Round of 64.
Ross Watson
- Watson received a later start date with first serve at 11:30 a.m. rather than 8:00, but couldn't overcome (6) Stefano Tsorotiotis of Oklahoma 1-6, 0-6.
