Women's Hoops Edged in Santa Clara

SANTA CLARA, California - Desire Finnie dropped 17 points and shot 50 percent from the field, while Jenelle Grant collected 11 points and 10 rebounds for her second career double-double, but the Tigers fell to the Santa Clara Broncos, 57-55, Saturday afternoon at the Leavey Center.

With the loss, the Tigers fall to 13-14 overall and 7-9 in the West Coast Conference, while Santa Clara moves to 9-18 overall and 5-11 in the WCC.

  • The first quarter was back-and-forth with the lead changing nine times. Anaya Brooklyn McDavid logged six points and hit three of her first four shots.
  • At the start of the second quarter, the Broncos began to fall apart missing four straight shots allowing Pacific to take the lead 19-18.
  • Heading into the locker room at the break, Grant snagged eight boards and was two of two at the line.
  • After the first 20 minutes, Pacific already had 12 points off 10 Santa Clara turnovers and held the advantage in rebounds with 20 over the Broncos' 14.
  • Both teams struggled in the third quarter with Pacific putting up six points and Santa Clara not far ahead netting only 10.
  • In the fourth quarter, the Broncos were held scoreless for over two minutes allowing the Tigers to maintain the lead, 49-45.
  • The two teams took turns holding the lead throughout the fourth quarter but the Broncos went on a 7-0 run to control the game late in the fourth.
  • Santa Clara ended the game with another two-minute scoring drought.
  • GeAnna Luaulu-Summers finished with 11 points and six rebounds, while McDavid finished with 10 points and shot 55 percent from the field.
  • Pacific finished ahead of the Broncos in offensive boards with 12, total rebounds with 36, free-throw percentage (72 percent), assists (13), steals (7), and points off turnovers with 18.
  • Santa Clara struggled at the line sinking 11 of their 18 attempts (61 percent).

  • LEAD CHANGE: There were 17 lead changes in Saturday's matchup. Pacific held the lead for the majority of the game commanding the game for 22 total minutes.
  • PLAYER OF THE GAME: Grant is the City of Stockton Human Resources Hardworking Player of the Game going four of 10 from the field with 11 points and two of two at the line. She also grabbed 10 boards in 34 minutes of play to complete her second double-double of the season.
  • OFF THE BENCH: The Tigers' bench came alive scoring 29 points. Finnie led the way with 17 points and Grant collected 11.

The Orange and Black head into the last weekend of regular season play before heading to the WCC tournament in Las Vegas. Pacific visits San Francisco on Thursday, Feb. 22 for a 7 p.m. tip-off followed by Senior Day at the Alex G.
