Box Score GAME SUMMARY:
An early first half lead by the Tigers fell just short of beating No. 23 Cal on Sunday afternoon at Stanford's Maple Pavillion as Pacific fell to the Golden Bears by a final score of 81-69.
The Tigers tested Cal early on in the first two quarters jumping out by as much as 10 points against their Pac-12 opponent but would be outscored, 30-17, in the third as they drop their first game of the season.
Pacific moves to 1-1 on the season while the Golden Bears add to their winning streak of 4-0.
First Quarter:
- Pacific came out the gates ready to play as the Tigers battled back and forth with the Bears through the first eight minutes of the quarter before assembling a 7-2 run with 1:32 to go to take a manageable 18-12 lead.
- Brooklyn McDavid netted two early shots from the key to get the Tigers going tallying seven points in seven minutes.
- The Orange and Black got good looks from the field outshooting Cal 21-12 in the first quarter.
- A pestering fullcourt pressure rattled the Bears early on as the Tigers forced seven turnovers.
Second Quarter:
- UOP continued it's spree of hot shooting as Ameela Li knocked down a jumpshot and Lianna Tillman drained a three in the first minute to put the Tigers up by nine, 23-14.
- Isabel Newman would lift the Tigers with a pullup three pointer at the 6:45 mark. Newman would go on to finish a fastbreak layup off a steal by Jessica Blakeslee to keep Cal at bay, down 28-20.
- Valerie Higgins converted on 4-4 free throws down the stretch putting the Tigers back up by 10 with just over two minutes in the half.
- The Bears would go on a 6-0 run, however, in the final minute to trim the Tigers' lead down to 1, 34-33, heading into the break.
Third Quarter:
- The Orange and Black would struggle from the field after halftime shooting 4-18 in the quarter.
- Cal went 7-14 in the third quarter and outrebounded the Tigers 16-13 to put them in front.
- With the score knotted at 39-39, the Tigers were held without a bucket while Cal converted on four shots to pull away 48-39. This marked the Bears' first lead of the ball game.
- Pacific had four looks at the basket in the final minute but could not find the back end as they trailed Cal 56-44 after three.
Fourth Quarter:
- Higgins and Li combined for 16 points in the quarter to keep the Tigers in contention. The duo combined for 6-9 shooting in the quarter.
- The Tigers trimmed the margin to as close as seven, 66-59, off a Li three pointer with 5:25 to go.
- Pacific would trade baskets with the Bears in the final three minutes of play. McDavid scored four of her six points in the third during that stretch.
Notables:
- The Tigers moved the ball efficiently making 27 baskets off 22 assists on Sunday. Six Tiger players tallied multiple assists in the contest with Li leading the way with a season-high eight.
- UOP also converted 18 points off 17 turnovers, seven of which occured in the first quarter.
- Valerie Higgins recorded a career-high 17 points to lead the Tigers. The redshirt sophomore came off a 13-point game versus UC Davis (Nov. 11th).
