Box Score Stockton, Calif. - It was an offensive struggle for the Tigers at Knoles Field as they dropped their season opener 2-0 to Cal Poly on Sunday, August 21st.
"It was tough," says head coach Kerri Scroope. "This is our first game out here, its opening day for us and we haven't had a lot of time together. We've only been here six short months putting a new system in so there's going to be gaps."
The Tigers came within inches of putting the ball in the back of the net multiple times but just could not convert against a tough Mustang defense. In the 36th minute, freshman Katelyn Chandler received a beautiful cross over the middle but her header just grazed over the crossbar, keeping it scoreless.
Just seven minutes later on the other side of the pitch, Cal Poly was able to get on the board with a header of their own. This time on a corner kick to Kelly Kesslop who got it just past goalie Regan Hislop to put the Mustangs up 1-0. Right before halftime the Mustangs added another goal on a dribbler off the foot of forward Caitlyn Kreutz.
Pacific used two goalies in the opener with Heslop getting the start and redshirt-sophomore Lena Perry taking over in the second half. Both 'keepers logged one save apiece, however Perry made sure the Mustang's scoring opportunities were limited in her relief effort.
"Were trying to give the goalies every opportunity and we've only had one exhibition game so it hasn't been enough for me to see all the keepers yet," continues Scroope. "Lena was the starting goal keeper last year and we're hoping she's going to step up now. I think she played a solid second half for us."
The Tigers continue their 2016 campaign Sunday, August 28th at 1 PM when they host New Mexico.
