Stockton, Calif. - The Pacific women's tennis team was edged by Gonzaga, 4-2, Saturday at Eve Zimmerman Tennis Center. Viktoriya Dzyuba and Maayan Sela posted singles wins for the Tigers.
After falling in doubles, the Tigers answered back with a win from Dzyuba at first singles, 6-3, 7-6 (4) over Sophie Whittle, but the Bulldogs posted wins at fourth and fifth singles. Alex Bourguignon topped Sabrina Rodriguez, 6-3, 6-3
at fourth, while Graciela Rosas won at fifth singles over Yuki Asami, 6-4, 6-3.
The tigers cut the gap to 3-2 as Sela finished off Samantha Polayes, 7-6 (6), 6-4 at second singles, but Domonique Garley clinched the match for Gonzaga with a three-set win over Anneroos Nederstigt, 5-7, 7-5, 6-1.
Cristina Saenz de Buruaga Ruiz went unfinished at third singles against Nevada Apollo, 6-3, 4-6, 2-4.
In doubles, Whittle & Polayes topped Dzyuba & Nederstigt, 6-3, at first singles, while Garley & Sissi Koehler won at third doubles, 6-3, over Sela & Saenz de Buruaga Ruiz. Second doubles for Asami & Sabrina Rodriguez against Bourguignon & Melanie Yates was tied 4-4, but went unfinished.
Gonzaga improves to 15-3 overall and 5-2 in West Coast Conference play while the Tigers fall to 7-11 overall and 2-6 in WCC action.
The Tigers will be back in action next Saturday at BYU for an 11:00 a.m. PT start.
