Stockton, Calif. - The Pacific women's tennis team posted a 4-1 victory over the Portland Pilots Friday afternoon at Eve Zimmerman Tennis Center.
Sabrina Rodriguez, Maayan Sela, and Viktoriya Dzyuba posted singles wins for the Tigers, and Pacific also took the doubles point to move to 7-10 overall and 2-5 in West Coast Conference play. Portland falls to 6-12 overall and 2-5 in the WCC.
Sela and Cristina Saenz de Buruaga Ruiz swept Maja Mladenovic & Emily Gould, 6-0, at third position to open doubles play. The Pilots answered back as Radina Dimitrova & Tatiana Grigoryan topped Yuki Asami & Rodriguez, 6-1, at second doubles. But Dzyuba & Anneroos Nederstigt prevailed over Lucia Butkovska & Tori Troesch, 6-4, at first doubles to put the Tigers ahead 1-0 headed to singles. Dzyuba & Anneroos Nederstigt improved to 6-2 in doubles play as a tandem, which leads the team.
Sela's 6-3, 6-0 win over Dimitrova at second singles finished first as the Tigers led 2-0 on Sela's 10th singles win of the season.
Dzyuba polished off Lucia Butkovska, 6-2, 7-5 at first singles, improving to 13-2 overall this season and 4-1 in WCC singles play. Mladenovic turned the tables on Saenz de Buruaga Ruiz in singles play, as she rebounded from the Tigers' doubles win to take the third singles match, 6-3, 6-4.
Rodriguez clinched the match with a three-set win over Grigoryan, 5-7, 6-0, 6-4.
Asami went unfinished against Tori Troesch, 6-2, 3-6, 0-2, and Nederstigt went unfinished against Saroop Dhatt, 3-6, 6-3, 1-4.
"Today felt right," head coach Charlotte Scatliffe said. "=From the moment we came together as a team from the time we left our home courts, we played together and for each other today. All of my players gave their best efforts and it's days like this that remind us what it's all about: the team. I'm very proud of the team and we are excited for our last home match of the season against Gonzaga tomorrow."
Pacific will be back in action on Saturday at 11 a.m. against Gonzaga at Eve Zimmerman Tennis Center.
