Second Half Flurry Downs The Tigers At UNLV

Box Score

Las Vegas, Nev. - Taking on the Rebels on their home field in Las Vegas, the Tigers found themselves on the wrong end of a second half scoring flurry as UNLV netted twice in the span of three minutes to send Pacific to a 2-0 defeat on Sunday, Sept. 6. The loss for the Tigers dropped their record to 0-4 on the season while the Rebels improved to 2-2 overall.

"We continued to make good progress this weekend and today towards where we want to be," said head coach Ryan Jorden. "We followed up Friday's tremendous second half with a great first half today playing some of the best soccer since I've been here. We continued to show improvement which is what we need to do. It was unfortunate that we weren't able to maintain the possession that we showed in the first half and it cost us in the second half. I was pleased with the response out of the team after we got down but the lesson to take out of today is that we can't put ourselves in that position any more."

Playing even with the Rebels for the first 45 minutes of action, the Tigers quickly found themselves playing from behind just six minutes into the second half of the afternoon contest when UNLV broke through for the first tally of the day in the 52nd minute. Working his way open in front of the net, UNLV's Oscar Velazquez capitalized on the scoring opportunity that presented itself early in the period as the sophomore blasted a shot from eight yards out across the cage and into the back of the left side of the net. The Velazquez strike was set up by Tony Murillo who put the ball on the foot of his teammate to put UNLV ahead 1-0.

With the lead in hand, the Rebels came up with an insurance goal just three minutes later when the Tigers tripped up a Rebel player inside of the 18 to setup a chance from the penalty spot. Given the free kick from the spot, Kevin Partida converted the penalty, beating Tiger keeper Josh Adachi for the second goal of the half.

For Partida and Adachi, the penalty kick was the first of two one-on-one clashes between the pair as Partida would get another shot from the penalty spot in the 76th minute after another Tiger foul inside the 18. This time, however, Adachi was up to the task as he turned away Partida's attempt. Adachi, who had missed the first three games of the season due to injury, came up with seven saves in the game while facing nine shots on goal out of 21 attempts by the Rebels.

Offensively, sophomore Tristan Blackmon had the Tigers' best chances throughout the afternoon as the second-year striker fired off four shots with three on frame only to be denied each time. In total, Richard Garness, the Rebels' starting keeper, came up with five saves on the day and was helped out by his defensive backline which cleared a potential goal by Richie Lee off the line in the 88th minute to keep the clean sheet intact.

Pacific returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 13, when the Tigers come home to Knoles Field for the first time in 2015. The Tigers will host San Jose State in their home opener as the two teams meet on the pitch at 7:00 pm. The game is part of a day-night doubleheader with Pacific's women's team as the Tiger women host regional rival UC Davis at 12:00 pm.
