Stockton, Calif. - University of the Pacific Men's Basketball Head Coach Ron Verlin has announced the signing of Maleke Haynes to a national letter of intent for the 2015-16 season. Transferring in after his freshman season, he will be ready to play immediately for the Tigers in 2015-16 season and has three years of eligibility remaining.
A 6-0 guard from Reseda, Haynes played his freshman season in 2014-15 at Saddleback Junior College in Mission Viejo. The Gauchos won the state title with a record of 33-2. Maleke played in all 35 games, making 29 starts including the last 26 all in a row. He scored in double figures seven times last season, including a career-high 19 points against Antelope Valley on Nov. 15. He had six or more assists 11 times, including a career-best of nine against LA Harbor on Nov. 28. He earned All-Orange Empire Conference First Team honors after averaging 7.3 points and 4.2 assists per game. He also led the team with 51 steals. New Tiger teammate Eric Thompson is also from Saddleback JC, but did not play with Haynes.
Haynes graduated from El Camino Real High School in Los Angeles, CA, where he had a successful high school career. A four year varsity starter, Haynes was the starting point guard for two CIF runners-up as well as two L.A. City Section CIF champions. In El Camino Real's first ever Division 1 City Section Championship, he was their leading scorer and made four free throws to clinch the game in the last 30 seconds. In both the 2011 and 2012 seasons Haynes was named second team all-CIF. In 2013 and 2014 Haynes garnered First Team All-City honors as the assist leader in the L.A. City Section. Haynes' brother, Calvin, played basketball at Oregon State University and his sister played at UNLV.
"We are excited to have Maleke join the Pacific family," said Verlin. "He has been a winner at every level and we expect him to bring the same mindset and poise to our team. He adds great depth and stability to our talented back court."
