Davis, Calif. - The Pacific women's tennis team opened the 2015 spring season with a 4-3 victory at UC Davis on Saturday, Jan. 31. The Tigers opened the dual match season 1-0, while UCD dropped to 2-4.
The Aggies took the doubles point, though the team of Cristina Saenz de Buruaga Ruiz and Antonella Santeusanio won at No. 3 doubles. The Tigers claimed the victory with four singles wins at the top four spots, with Hana Ritterova, Iveta Masarova, Francis Dean and Christiana Ferrari all getting victories. Masarova clinched the match for the Tigers, winning 6-1, 4-6 and 7-5 over Lani-Rae Green in the final match to conclude.
"What a match! I'm incredibly proud of the ladies for stepping up today and taking care of business," said Head Coach Charlotte Scatliffe. "I think the nerves of our first match were present in doubles and we lost the point, but happy for our freshman Antonella to pick up her first college win. As for singles I'm very pleased with the top of our lineup 1-4 picking up wins. Christiana did a great job not only getting the win but playing a solid second set after a close first one. The biggest props of the day go senior Iveta Masarova who came up huge clinching the win for us after being down 0-3 in the third set and the only match left on the court. She showed great poise to remain calm and step up to play big time tennis and going after her shots, especially after missing this weeks practice battling the flu. Overall I am very pleased with the team effort and look forward to another week of practice before heading to Vegas for three dual matches in a row."
The Tigers are next in action against Kansas in Las Vegas on Friday, Feb. 6.
