Stockton, Calif. - Krisztian Laczkovics scored twice, but No. 7 UC Santa Barbara posted a 9-7 win over the No. 6 Pacific men's water polo team Sunday morning at the Kap7 NorCal Classic. The host Tigers will play in the Seventh Place Game at 1:20 p.m. Sunday.
Pacific roared out to a 3-0 lead behind a pair of goals from Krisztian Laczkovics and a tally from Tim Reeves in the first quarter.
In the second period, Eric Van de Mortel got the Gauchos on the board, before Kale Ai gave Pacific a three-goal lead again at 4-1.
UC Santa Barbara began to chip into the lead as Kevin Cappon and Samer Alkateb scored to pull within one. Bryan Snyder's goal brought the Gauchos level with 47 seconds left before halftime.
The Tigers took a 5-4 lead in the third period, as Sean Grady scored. But UCSB added back-to-back goals from Eric Van de Mortel and Mark Garner for a 6-5 lead.
Ryan Baliani finished a 6-on-5 for UCSB as the Gauchos took their largest lead at 7-5.
Simon Vogel answered back for Pacific early in the fourth quarter but the Tigers couldn't draw level on a six-on-five advantage, missing wide.
Off a turnover, Chase Racich finished on a breakaway for an 8-6 UCSB lead with 5:28 to play.
Stevenson brought Pacific back within one, finishing from outside five meters.
After Pacific killed a 6-on-5, UCSB corralled the rebound off the cross bar and Van de Mortel snuck a shot inside the post to restore a two-goal cushio at 9-7 with 2:44 to play.
Stevenson hit the cross bar with 1:45 to go, and the Gauchos ran out the clock to advance to the Fifth Place game against Long Beach State.
Pacific (5-3) will face No. 8 UC San Diego in the Seventh Place Game.
Brady Moore made 10 saves in goal for Pacific, while Chris Whitelegge posted five.
