Eugene, Ore. - Putting himself in contention after day one at the NCAA Regionals, junior Byron Meth sits just two shots off the individual pace after firing a -1, 69 on Thursday, May 15. Meth's one-under on day one put him just off the pace of Air Force's Kyle Westmoreland who posted a -3, 67 as the top individual golfer at the tournament. The top spot in the tournament was held by Stanford's Patrick Rodgers as the No. 3 golfer in the country went four-under to lead the way.
Playing on a course he knows quite well, Meth started his day off with a bang as the third-year ace birdied the opening hole of the tournament to set up his round. With a stroke in hand, Meth steadily went about his business at the Eugene Country Club course as he parred 11-straight holes before grabbing another stroke on the par-5, 13th. Two-under through 13 holes, Meth suffered his lone hiccup of the day on the par-4, 14th when he bogied the 405 yard hole to give back a stroke and move back to one-under. Meth immediately put the mistake behind him and close out his round with four-consecutive pars to head into the clubhouse at one-under par and in a tie for sixth place overall in the standings.
Meth, as an individual, is playing for a spot in the NCAA Championships which will be held in Hutchinson, Kan. from May 23-28. He must finish as the top individual to advance to the championships.
