Stockton, Calif. - Krisztian Laczkovics and J.T. Sarmento each scored two goals, but No. 12 UC Santa Barbara scored three goals in the fourth to stun the No. 7 Pacific Men's Water Polo team 8-6 in the opening round of the MPSF Championship.
UC Santa Barbara keeper Chris Whitelegge made eight second-half saves as the Gauchos held Pacific scoreless in the fourth quarter to erase a 6-4 deficit and advance to the quarters against No. 1 UCLA.
The Tigers, who finished tied for sixth in the regular season, but were the eight seed via tie-breaker, are eliminated from the tournament and wrap their season at 14-12 overall.
Laczkovics and Sarmento posted first-quarter goals for an early 2-0 lead, but the Gauchos answered with goals by Shane Hauschild and Brendan McElroy to tie the game at 2-2 after one period.
In the second, Michael Woodbury gave the Tigers a 3-2 lead but with 2:08 to go UCSB tallied its lone goal of the period as Bryan Snyder converted.
In the third, Laczkovics opened scoring but McElroy responded. Matt McKaig put Pacific up 5-4 before Sarmento scored his second for a 6-4 lead with 2:32 to go in the third.
But Snyder posted a 6-on-5 goal before the end of the period and the Tigers couldn't beat Whitelegge in the fourth. Liam Gaughan scored a two-meter goal to tie the game at 6-6, and McElroy's third proved to be the game-winner. Nicholas Jordan added a goal with 40 seconds left to seal the win for the Gauchos.
Brady Moore posted seven saves in goal for the Tigers.
