Irvine, Calif. - The No. 7 Pacific men's water polo team was stunned by No. 10 UC Irvine Saturday on the road. The Anteaters jumped out to a 5-0 lead and the Tigers couldn't come back, falling 17-10.
Krisztian Laczkovics led Pacific with five goals, while Kale Ai, Sean Grady, Tim Reeves, Ikko Saito and Devon Thumwood each posted one.
The Anteaters, who had lost three straight to the Tigers by a combined score of 45-27, shut out Pacific in the first quarter and built a 10-1 lead in the second quarter.
The Tigers slowly chipped away, drawing to within 13-7 entering the fourth, but the Anteaters slammed the door in the fourth.
Lovre Milos scored five goals for UC Irvine. Kyle Trush scored the first two goals of the match, and Miles Kevis, Ryan Warde, and Milos added tallies. Dylan Peterson made a pair of first quarter saves as the Anteaters built a 5-0 lead after one.
Grady put Pacific on the scoreboard early in the second, but Jared Osborn answered for UC Irvine, the first of five-straight goals.
The Tigers out-scored the Anteaters over the final 20 minutes, as Reeves tallied before halftime and Laczkovics scored four-straight third quarter goals. The fourth pulled Pacific within 12-6. Saito beat the clock at the end of the period but the Tigers couldn't cut the deficit to less than the 13-7 margin the rest of the way.
Chris Hughes made three saves in the second half, while Brady Moore posted four in the first. Peterson finished with 11 saves in goal for UC Irvine.
The Tigers fall to 12-7 overall, 0-2 in MPSF action. UC Irvine improves to 13-6 overall, 1-2 in MPSF play.
Pacific will visit No. 1 Southern Cal next Saturday in a noon match-up, before facing No. 5 Long Beach State on Sunday at noon.
