Tucson, Ariz. - Playing its first competitive golf of the new year, the Pacific golf team ended the opening day of play at the Arizona Intercollegiate in 10th place on Monday, Jan. 27. The Tigers were led by their two juniors at the top of the groupings as Byron Meth and Drew Bender each went +4 to finish in a tie for 19th on the day.
As a team, Pacific shot +31 over the first two rounds of action as they put themselves ahead of four other teams at the tournament including No. 47 Oregon State.
Throughout the first two rounds of action at the Sewailo Golf Club in Tucson, Ariz., the Tigers were led by their two upperclassmen as Meth and Bender traded top rounds for the Tigers. Opening the day, Meth led the way for the Tigers as he posted a -1, 70 over the first 18-holes of play. The round in the red proved to be the lone round under-par for Pacific on the day as Meth closed out the opening round on fire with three-straight birdies posting a -4 over the final six holes of play.
In round two, it was Bender that led the way as the third-year Tiger remained consistent on the course firing off a +2, 73 to match his opening round score. In the round, Bender posted a trio of birdies, including tallying two that bookended around his turn to his final nine holes of play.
Overall, the two juniors, along with their teammates, will look to push their way up the leaderboard on Tuesday, Jan. 28 when they play the final 18 holes of at the Arizona Intercollegiate. The Tigers and the rest of the field tee-off at 7:00 am (PST)
