Pullman, Wash. - In a day that started with high hopes ended with heartbreak as the Pacific golf team just missed out on a berth to the NCAA Championships. Beginning the day in a tie for fifth overall, the Tigers struggled out of the gate and ended just off the pace in seventh place overall on Saturday, May 18 to finish two strokes back of the fifth and final spot in the NCAA Championships. Overall, the Tigers went posted a +7 on the day and finished their stay in Pullman at -6 for the three-day tournament.
In addition to just missing out on the Championships as a team, sophomore Eric Sugimoto just missed his chance at representing the Tigers' as an individual in the final tournament of the season as he finished his tournament one-shot back of making the NCAA Championships. For the day, Sugimoto posted a +3, 75 to drop to -6 overall on the scoreboard, one-stroke back of North Texas' Rodolfo Cazaubon who posted a -7 on the board to take the individual berth to the championships.
As a team, the Tigers just missed out on their chance to head there as a squad as Pacific struggled in its final round of play to fall outside of the tournament's top-five. A rough start to their day kept Pacific from holding its ground as the No. 5 team on the leaderboard and dropped the Tigers off the pace, from which they would not recover. Overall, Pacific went seven-over for the day as it shot 295 on the final day of play to finish at -6 overall and two shots back of the fifth and final spot in the NCAA Championships. On the day, the Tigers' top golfer proved to be its senior as Alex Edfort posted his best round of the week in his final collegiate tournament as a Tigers. The senior capped a stellar career by firing a -1, 71 in the third and final round of the regionals, but his play was not enough as he was the lone Tiger to go under-par on Saturday afternoon.
