Long Beach, Calif. - Picking up right where they left off two weeks prior, the Pacific golf team came out blazing at the Del Walker Intercollegiate Golf Classic as the Tigers shot a -4, 556 during first day play on Monday, Feb. 25. The Tigers were the lone team to finish the first two rounds of action underpar as Pacific will take an eight-stroke lead into the final 18 holes of play on Tuesday.
Throughout the day, the Tigers veterans led the way as Pacific saw its three top golfers finish within the top-five on the leaderboard. Leading the way was senior Alex Edfort as the Somerset, N.J. native tallied a -5, 135 to place his name a top the standings. Edfort carded a first-round-best 66 in the opening round of play to set the standard from which to chase while he followed with a -1, 69 in round two to complete his day. In the first round, Edfort made just one mistake, bogeying the par-4, 16th, but padded his score with five birdies, including knocking one home on the par-5, 18th. Edfort's play netted him a one-stroke lead heading into the final day of play as he will look to hold off Loyola Marymount's Tyler Torano who posted a -4, 136.
In addition to Torano, Edfort will be looking over his shoulder at a pair of Tigers as the sophomores Byron Meth and Eric Sugimoto finished just off the senior's pace. A -2, 138 saw Meth finish the first-two rounds in fourth place as he started his day with a 73 before throwing down the gauntlet with a tournament-best 65 in round two. Right behind his classmate, Sugimoto came into the clubhouse at -1 and in a tie for fifth overall as the second-year golfer posted scores of 69 and 70.
The Tigers will look to take home their second straight tournament title of the 2013 season as final round action commences at 8:48 am for Pacific. To follow along with the Tigers at the Del Walker Intercollegiate Golf Classic live scoring will be provided online at www.GolfStatResults.com.
