Rancho Santa Fe, Calif. - Taking on a tough field and an even tougher golf course, the Pacific golf team buckled down and played their way to a tournament title as the Tigers won the 2013 edition of The Farms Collegiate Invitational on Tuesday, Feb. 12. Pacific finished the tournament at +8 overall, outlasting the Gaels of Saint Mary's by three shots for the first win of the year for the Tigers.
Entering the final day of play three strokes back of Saint Mary's, the Tigers overcame a tough course over the final 18 holes of action to best the Gaels by six strokes on the day. The victory for the Tigers marked their first tournament win since taking home the Pacific Invitational title in 2010.
"I've always said we have a talented team," said head coach Brandon Goethals. "This week we stuck to the game plan and it paid off. I am so proud of our guys, they played great."
Individually, the Tigers just missed out on taking home their first title of the year as well as sophomore Eric Sugimoto ended his tournament in a tie for fourth place at one-over par. The sophomore finished two strokes back of the tournament winner, Missouri's Emilio Cuartero, who picked up the top spot on the leaderboard with a -1, 215 total. Sugimoto made a late run for the title over the final two holes of play when he birdied both 17 and 18, only to come up just short.
Behind Sugimoto, senior Alex Edfort and sophomore Byron Meth each took home top-10 finishes as the duo ended tied for 6th at +2. Meth made his move up the leaderboard on the final day as he posted a 71 over the final 18 holes to jump from 11th into the top-10.
Pacific will be back in action on Feb. 25-26 at the Del Walker Match Play Championships in Long Beach, Calif.
