Pacific Falls At Home To #9 San Diego

Box Score

Stockton, Calif. - Playing their annual pink match at home at the Alex G. Spanos Center, the Pacific women's volleyball team could not overcome a rough hitting day as the Tigers fell 3-0 to No. 9 San Diego on Saturday, Oct. 26. The loss dropped Pacific's record to 11-11 on the year and 4-7 in the WCC while the Toreros improved to 17-3 overall and 9-2 in conference action.

Set scores for the match were: 25-20, 25-22, 25-18.

The story of the match proved to be early struggles for the Tigers as in each of the three sets on the day Pacific dug itself in a deep hole before trying to rally back. Despite their best efforts, the early trouble was too much to overcome as the top ranked Toreros were able to hold off the Tiger advances each time.

In set one, the Tigers found themselves trailing by as much as six points midway through the frame at 18-12 before a 3-0 run led by sophomore Kat Schulz got Pacific briefly back into the contest. Despite the momentum, Pacific was not able to stop the Toreros' attack which pushed the San Diego lead back to six before closing the Tigers out.

Tailing by as much as seven midway through set two, the Tigers again battled their way back into the match behind a 10-3 run that knotted the contest at 17-17. For Pacific, the blocking of senior Megan Birch and junior Gillian Howard was what changed the momentum of the set, frustrating the San Diego hitters while setting up the Tigers' own attack. However, the trouble that cost Pacific two nights prior reared its ugly head once again as a critical service error at 21-21 turned the tides of the set and with it the match.

Down 2-0, Pacific set itself up for a struggle in set three falling behind 17-7 before starting their climb back up the mountain. For the Tigers, the 10 point deficit would be too much as Pacific would close the gap to four three different times before ultimately falling to the Toreros.

Overall, Birch led the way offensively with nine kills to go along with four blocks. Howard ended her day with a team-best six blocks but was held to just six kills. Freshman Lexi Elman's streak of 20+ digs ended with 16 digs in the match while her classmate, Alicja Wilk added a career-best 13 digs.

The Toreros were led by Chloe Ferrari who tallied 12 kills on .588 hitting. Alaysia Brown and Taylor Hollins each posted 11 kills in support while Hollis added 14 digs for the doule-double. Overall, San Diego out hit the Tigers, .256-to-.152 for the match.

Pacific is back in action on Thursday, Oct. 31 as they take on St. Mary's at 7:00 pm at the Spanos Center. The match was originally scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 2 but was moved to Thurday night.
