Wavomba, Topp Tally, But Tigers Fall to No. 2 Stanford

Box Score

Palo Alto, Calif. –  The Pacific Tigers dropped a 5-2 decision Sunday afternoon at the No. 2-ranked Stanford Cardinal.

Senior forward Kristina Wavomba and senior midfielder Alex Topp each posted a goal and Wavomba added an assist for the Tigers, who fall to 1-1-0 on the season.  Sophomore defender Brittni Beeman picked up her third assist of the year.

Stanford, ranked second in the NSCAA Top 25, improves to 2-0-0. Pacific became the first team to score twice on the Cardinal in 24 matches, and joined North Carolina as the second team to score multiple goals on the Cardinal in their last 42 games.

"Stanford is obviously a fantastic team, there's a reason they're practically undefeated the last two years," head coach Keith Coleman said. "I'm really happy with a lot of what we did today. We scored two goals that were good goals - one during play and another off a free kick, which is something we're really trying to get better at. We're looking at it as 'glass is half full.' We're excited about a lot of what we did today."

Sophomore goalkeeper Tashia Long set a career-high in saves with 13, topping the eight she recorded in the Tigers' 1-1 tie with No. 16 California last season.

"She played really well today. She really played like the goalkeeper we thought she could be today," Coleman added. "The ones that were goals were upper 'V' or side-net. I don't think there was anything she could do. But everything else, she smothered, she saved, she got a hand on and we're really excited about the way she's playing now."

The Tigers opened to an early lead in the fifth minute as senior midfielder Alex Topp fed Wavomba in the middle of the field near the top of the box. Wavomba controlled, worked to her left and then cut back a shot to the lower right corner for her second goal of the season.

The goal was the first goal Stanford had allowed in the first half in nearly a year, going back 20 matches to September 17, 2010.

But the Cardinal answered back in the 11th minute, as Chioma Ubogagu played it the feet of Camille Levin, who blasted a shot to the top left corner from the top of the box.

Just 1:38 later, the Stanford scored In transition as Ubogagu came loose and one-touched a pass from Lindsay Taylor into the right side from 10 yards out.

Long made a pair of diving stops in the first half to keep the Tigers in the match, but off a scramble in front, the Cardinal tacked on a goal with just 10 seconds left before the half, as Obogagu tallied her second of the match from 12 yards out to the upper right corner.

Long made six saves in the first half, as the Cardinal out-shot Pacific 18-3.

Six minutes into the second half, Stanford struck again as Taylor slammed home a sharp angle cross from Levin, one-timing the ball out of the air an into the far panel.

Topp pulled Pacific to within 4-2, as Wavomba played a pass from sophomore Brittni Beeman on to Alex Topp, who slid to get a foot on it and redirect it past Stanford goalkeeper Lindsay Dickerson in the 62nd minute.

The assist for Beeman was her third of the year, exceeding her 2010 total of two just two games into the 2011 campaign.

Stanford tacked on the fifth goal in the 82nd minute, as Levin cut through the middle came one on one with the keeper and finished to the low post for her second goal of the match.

The Tigers will head to southern California for next weekend's USD Tournament as Pacific meets host San Diego on Friday, August 26, at 7:30 p.m., and USC on Sunday, August 28, at 2:00 p.m.
