Provo, Utah -
After the first day of action at the 2011 PING Cougar Classic the Pacific golf team is in prime position as they sit in a tie for second in the 18-team field on Friday, April 15. Leading the way for the Tigers at the Riverside Country Club in Provo, Utah, sophomore Alex Edfort fired off a two round total, good enough for second place in the individual standings at 7-under for the day. As a team Pacific entered the clubhouse at -4, seven strokes off the pace set by UNLV.
After a 45 minute frost delay to open the day, Edfort came out on the course with an opening round, -4, 68, to put himself in immediate contention for the individual title. Finishing the first round on an upswing, Edfort birdied four of his final seven holes including the final two to build momentum for the afternoon. That momentum he would carry into his second trip around the course as he posted another sub-70 round in the late afternoon. Picking up four birdies and shooting just one bogey, the sophomore shot a -3, 69 to post a red seven on the board for the day. Edfort sits in sole possession of second place in the standings and just two strokes back of UNLV's Kevin Penner who posted a -9 at the top of the leaderboard after day one.
Behind Edfort, senior Alex Johnson shook off a tough start to his tournament in round one to tally 68 of his own in round two to help propel the Tigers up the leaderboard. A tumultuous round in its making, Johnson posted a high of seven birdies in his second 18 holes of the day, a mark which counterbalanced three bogeys. Despite his 4-under second round, Johnson had to settle for a tie for 20th in the standings after an opening round of 77 put the senior at +1 for the day. Senior T.J. Bordeaux posted Pacific's only other red number of the day with a -1, 143 for his two rounds. Bordeaux is tied for 14th on the leaderboard after the first day of play with his sites set on moving up the standings with a solid third round.
The Tigers and their sophomore will look to push their way to the top of the standings on the final day of play at the tournament that tees off at approximately 7:22 am PST. The start time was pushed back in hopes of avoiding the early morning frost that delayed the start of the first day of play.
