Stockton, Calif. - After a tight first day of action at the 2011 Stockton Convention & Visitors Bureau Pacific Invitational sponsored by Ron Berberian, the Pacific golf team sits in fifth place on Monday, October 31. Pacific shot a -3, 281 to end day one three stokes off the lead as they trail Denver and Nevada which each shot -6 through the first 18 holes of play.
Taking on the par-71, 6,757 yard Brookside Course, the Tigers got a solid first day showing out of their upperclassmen who led the way in Pacific's defense of their 2010 title. Out front for the Tigers was junior Alex Edfort who notched a -4, 67 to put himself near the top of the individual leaderboard after the first day of play. The Somerset, N.J. native sits in third place in the standings as he chases Charlotte's Olafur Loftsson and Nevada's Kevin Lucas. Loftsson leads the tournament at six-under while Lucas trails the leader by just one stroke.
Behind Edfort, the Tigers saw senior Dan Garcia rally late on day one as Pacific's elder-stateman finished with a -1, 70. After a sluggish start, Garcia began his back-nine charge with an eagle on the par-5, 10th, as he went four-under in the final nine holes of play to get back into title contention. Joining Garcia in 14th on the leaderboard, was freshman Eric Sugimoto, who also ended his day at one-under after an up and down first round at the invitational.
Outside of Pacific's play on the course, the first round of the Pacific Invitational was highlighted by Colorado State's Cameron Harrel's ace on the par-3, 152 yard 14th. The hole-in-one has become a regular occurance at the invitational after Oregon State's Jonnie Motomochi marked an ace on the par-3, 12th during the 2010 addition of the tournament.
