Box Score Fullerton, Calif. - Needing a win to stay alive in the race for a Big West Tournament berth, the Pacific women's soccer team was stung by an overtime goal from Cal State Fullerton Friday night, as the Titans took a 1-0 win over the Tigers.
After a scoreless 90 minutes, Fullerton scored on the first shot over overtime as Caitlin Mellano sent a corner kick into the box where the ball was headed towards the net by her sister, Lauren Mellano.
Pacific sophomore goalkeeper Tashia Long nabbed the ball, and the Tigers played on, but the linesman pointed to the goal, ruling it had crossed the goal line in its entirety. Amid protests from the Pacific defense, Fullerton celebrated their 1-0 home win.
"It's a tough way to lose, for sure. They said it was in, but you'd like to see something more definitive to decide a match like that," head coach Keith Coleman said.
"This conference is so tight, that it was literally a game of inches tonight. We had our chances: one inch more on that shot off the post, or any other play, and the game could have gone a completely different way. We're obviously disappointed in the result, but I'm not disappointed in the team. This was one of the best games we played on the road all year. We definitely played well enough to win. The finality of it is a little, well, you just feel a little empty."
The Tigers fall to 8-8-1 overall, and 2-4-1 in the Big West, with all four loses coming by one goal, including two in overtime.
The match was the 11th overtime match of the year for Fullerton (8-8-3 overall; 2-4-1 Big West), tying an NCAA record for most games in a season requiring extra time.
Pacific and Fullerton each tallied three shots in a scoreless first half. In the second frame, the Tigers out-shot the Titans, 5-3, but couldn't convert on a pair of opportunities. Senior forward Kristina Wavomba's shot in the 61st minute hit the post and a chip shot from senior midfielder Nydia Ramos seconds later went just wide.
Long recorded a save with nine seconds remaining to keep the Tigers alive and send the match to overtime. For the match, Long made three saves for Pacific, while Fullerton goalkeeper Lindsey Maricic recorded two.
The Tigers will face Long Beach State on Sunday at 2 p.m. in the season finale.
