Tucson, Ariz. -
Teeing off for the first time in over two months, the Pacific golf team had to shake off some rust during the first round of the Arizona Intercollegiate on the morning of January 31. Facing sloppy playing conditions and delays due to rain, the Tigers finished the opening round with a 289, +5 at the Par 71, 6,793 yard Arizona National course. Pacific sits four strokes off the pace and in a tie for third as San Diego State and Pepperdine took the first round lead with after firing 285, -1.
Individually, the Tigers were led by Alex Edfort as the sophomore from Somerset, N.J. was the only Tiger to put the tough conditions behind him en route to a 3-under, 68. Edfort put together his strong showing with a four-birdie back-nine to finish in third. He sits three strokes off the pace set by Pepperdine's Andrew Putnam who posted a -6, 65, in the first 18 holes.
Thirty-six holes were scheduled for the day, but play was suspended due to
darkness at 4:45 p.m. Some teams have as many as nine holes to complete
before the final round can begin on Tuesday, February 1. Play is scheduled to resume at 7:00 a.m.
When play was suspended the Tigers each had four holes remaining to play in second round action and sat just one shot off the lead at 10-over par. Three teams, UNLV, UTEP and San Diego State sit at +9 while the Tigers are tied with Pepperdine for fourth place. Live results for the tournament can be followed at www.GolfStatResults.com
