Hitting the links in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, the Pacific golf team struggled to find their groove on day one of the Cabo Invitational, hosted by Santa Clara, as they finished the opening round in a tie for fifth place. For the round, the Tigers shot +16 as they trail Houston by by 14 strokes as the Cougars lead the tournament after the first round with a team score of 290, +2.
Taking on the Querencia Golf Course the Tigers were led by senior T.J. Bordeaux (Tacoma, Wash.) who posted a +1, 73 through the first 18 holes. The senior finished the day in the top-10 individually as he sits in a tie for No. 8 on the leaderboard, five shots back of UC Irvine's Bryan Harris who shot a -4, 68 on the par-72, 7070 yard course. Through out the round, Bordeaux struggled with consistency despite shooting just one over for the day as he fired off five birdies, including four on the front-nine holes, but also suffered from three bogeys, including a devastating quadruple-bogey on the par-four sixth,.
Behind Bordeaux were seniors Alex Johnson (Tucson, Ariz.) and Patrick Kucich (Stockton, Calif.) who each posted a +4, 76 on day one of the invitational. Both Johnson and Kucich carded four birdies through out the day, but six bogeys, including a tough triple-bogey, did in Johnson while Kucich suffered from six bogeys, including two double-bogeys.
The Tigers will tee-off round two tomorrow at 10:00 am at the Qerencia Golf Course as they look to chase down Houston while climbing up the leaderboards.
