STOCKTON, Calif. - The offense for the Pacific Tigers women's soccer team exploded Sunday, scoring three goals in a shutout over Cal State Fullerton at Stagg Memorial Stadium. Pacific, which hadn't scored multiple times in a match this season, received second half goals from senior Kim Hargrave, junior Kristina Wavomba and senior Sammi Teramae.
With the win, Pacific improves to 4-6-3 overall, 1-2-0 in Big West play. The Tigers remain unbeaten at home, with a 3-0-1 record.
"It's been a long time coming," head coach Keith Coleman said. "We had a slow start. At halftime, we talked about what we wanted to be about. They came out and started pressuring them. We really decided to go pressure as hard as we could, and we created a lot of turnovers and opportunities. That's the monkey off our back. Hopefully, it's the igniter of a lot more goals to come."
In the 53rd minute, freshman defender Brittni Beeman sent a long breakout pass over the top of the Fullerton defense. Hargrave, a senior playing forward, headed the ball over the Titans' goalkeeper for a 1-0 lead and her second goal of the season.
"I'm the shortest one on the team, so I thought I'd score a header," Hargrave said.
Just under 20 minutes later, Hargrave teamed up with Wavomba for the second goal. Hargrave danced in from the corner, and found Wavomba just outside the eight-yard line. Wavomba received the pass, spun and drilled a shot off the side panel of the goal to the keeper's right.
"I heard Dubs screaming for it," Hargrave continued. "She wanted it, and she got it. It was great."
The Tigers poured it on, junior midfielder Angelica Figueroa and sophomore forward Maricela Padilla worked the ball into the same corner where Hargrave and Wavomba produced the second goal. Padilla sent a pass over to Sammi Teramae, who was cutting in and placed a shot back across the goal mouth to the goalkeeper's left for a 3-0 lead with less than eight minutes remaining.
The Tigers owned a 13-1 shots advantage in the second half, and 16-4 overall for the match. Pacific tallied six shots on goal to the Titans' two.
Redshirt senior Jill Medigovich made two saves in net for her third shutout of the season. She also played 45 minutes in each of two other Pacific clean sheets.
Cal State Fullerton goalkeeper Jessica Change made three saves. The Titans fall to 3-9-0 overall and 0-1-0 in the Big West.
Wavomba's goal was her first of the season, and 13th of her career. She ranks 10th on the Tigers all-time scoring list, one back of Bunny Dickson (2004-07) for ninth.
Figueroa moves into third on Pacific's all-time assist leaderboard with her 16th career helper. She also moved past Dickson for ninth on the Tigers' points list with her 36th career point.
Pacific is back in action on Friday at Cal Poly in a 7 p.m. kickoff. The Tigers will face UC Santa Barbara on Sunday at noon.
