Pacific Earns Second Big West Victory of the Season By Defeating UC Davis, 5-2

Davis, Calif. - The Pacific women's tennis team earned a strong conference victory against UC Davis defeating the Aggies, 5-2, on Friday, March 6.

The Tigers moved to 6-6 overall and 2-0 in Big West Conference play while the Aggies' 2009 season record dropped to 7-8.

Pacific swept doubles play in Davis winning the doubles point, 3-0. Pacific junior Svenja Arens (Bensberg, Germany) and sophomore Kateryna Nezhura (Kiev, Ukraine) swiftly defeated UC Davis' Jenna Kappel and Andrea Phillips, 8-3, in the No. 3 position. Tiger sophomore No. 87 Jenifer Widjaja (Sao Roque, Sao Paulo, Brazil) and sophomore Olga Gumenyuk (Kiev, Ukraine) secured the doubles point from the No. 1 position by defeating the Aggies' Herzyl Legaspi and Dahra Zamudio, 8-5.

In singles action, Pacific won the first two match points to grab an early 3-0 lead over UC Davis.

Widjaja continued to impress fans as she conquered her 11th No. 1 position match for the Tigers. Widjaja easily defeated the Aggies' Desiree Stone in only two sets, 6-2, 6-1. Following Nezhura's victory in the No. 5 position, Arens battled agressively in the No. 3 position against the Aggies' Herzyl Legaspi. Arens pushed the match to three sets conquering the first, 1-6, then dropping the last two, 6-3, 6-2, giving Davis their first point of the day.

It was Gumenyuk who clinched the Tigers' match victory from the No. 6 position when she battled Davis' Emma Shaprio for three sets. Gumenyuk lost the first set, 0-6, but had a strong come back as she went on to win the next 2 sets, 6-4, 7-5.

Pacific senior Clara Schumacher (Zaragoza, Spain) captured the fifth and final point for the Tigers from the No. 4 position. Schumacher defeated Davis' Jenna Kappel in three sets, winning the first set, 7-5, then falling in the second, 1-6. Schumacher battled more agressively in the third set and easily took the match point, 6-0.

The Tigers are back in action Saturday, March 7, when they host the UC Riverside Highlanders in the Hal Nelson Tennis Courts at 1 pm.
