Las Vegas, Nev. - Behind a second half strike from freshman Kristina Wavomba (Encinitas, Calif.) the Pacific women's soccer team picked up a 1-0 shutout of the Nevada Wolf Pack at the UNLV Nike Classic on Sunday, August 31. The win moved the Tigers to 2-2 on the season and 1-1 at the tournament while Wolf Pack dropped to 0-3 on the year and 0-2 at the tournament.
After a scoreless first half that saw the Tigers outshoot the Wolf Pack 7-to-2, Pacific finally snapped a scoreless streak of over 225 minutes with a goal off of the foot of Wavomba. With a deep ball played over the heads of the Wolf Pack defense by sophomore Kylee Ah Choy (Mililani, Hawaii), Wavomba was able to beat te defense to the loose ball and free herself for the scoring chance. In front of the leftside of the net, Wavomba slotted a low shot towards the far post that beat the outstretched dive of Sarah Hunt to give the Tigers their 1-0 lead. The goal was her second of the season giving her the team lead.
Pacific would make the lone goal stick with a strong defensive effort from its backline as Ah Choy, sophomore Chyanne Alejado (Kapolei, Hawaii), junior Chelsea Gomes (Coto de Caza, Calif.) and freshman Alex Topp (San Diego, Calif.) shut down all of the Nevada advances that they faced. Their play along with the midfield ensured the Tigers of their second shutout of the season. In all, the Tigers gave up eight shots on the day with only three on goal that had to be saved.
Offensively, Pacific fired off a season-high 12 shots throughout the day with senior Laura King (Livermore, Calif.) posting seven of those shots. Freshman Laura Hogan (Poway, Calif.) took two shots with none bigger than one coming off of a breakaway early in the second half that ultimately was saved off the fingertips of Hunt and off of the crossbar. In all, the Tigers had eight shots on goal with seven resulting in saves for Nevada and one posting as the Tigers lone score of the afternoon.
The Tigers will be back in action on Friday, September 5, as they come home to host Central Florida in a game at Stagg Memorial Stadium. The game is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
