Stockton Calif. The Pacific women's tennis team concluded their weekend of play with a 7-0 loss to No.49 Sacramento State Sunday March 2, 2008.
The loss dropped the Tigers to 3-7 on the season, while the Hornets improved to 10-1.
No.49 Sacramento State began the day sweeping the doubles point against Pacifc. The Hornets took the early lead when Katrina Zheltova and Melissa Valenzuela defeated junior Jolanta Twarowska (Hamburg, Germany) and freshman Olga Gumenyuk (Kiev, Ukraine) at the No. 1 doubles spot, 8-1. Sacramento State sealed the doubles point with Aileen Tsan and Anastassia Lyssenko defeating freshman Kateryna Nezhura (Kiev, Ukraine) and junior Clara Schuhmacher (Zaragoza, Spain) 8-4 at No.3 doubles.
The Tigers failed to produce a winner in singles action, with the Hornets taking all six matches. Pacific did extend two of the matches to three set decisions including sophomore Svenja Arens (Bensberg,Germany) loss at No.2 to Melissa Valenzuela 6-2, 4-6, 1-0(6). The second three set match was the final match of the afternoon at No.4 when freshman Kateryna Nezhura (Kiev, Ukraine) fell to Luba Schifris 7-6, 6-4, 1-0(6).
Pacifc returns to the courts Saturday March 8, when they travel to UC Santa Barbara. Match is slated for 11:am
