Tigers Hold Off Long Beach State, 83-77

The Pacific men's basketball team improved to 11-4, 2-0 Big West Conference with an 83-77 win at Long Beach State on Thursday, Jan. 10. The 49ers fell to 3-11 (0-3 Big West) with the loss.

The Tigers and Long Beach State played even in the first half, with 10 ties in the first 20 minutes. Tied at 21-21 with 6:57 remaining, Pacific scored the next five points to take a 26-21 lead. The 49ers came right back with a 7-0 run of their own to lead 28-26 with 2:53 left. Junior Chad Troyer (Seattle, Wash.) hit a three-pointer in the corner after a loose ball scramble to give the Tigers a 33-32 halftime lead.

Long Beach State out-scored the Tigers 8-3 to take a 40-36 lead at the start of the second half, but the Tigers then used an 18-0 run to take a 54-40 lead with 11:05 left in the game. The 49ers would respond with a 12-4 run to cut the Pacific lead to 58-52 with 8:18 left. The Tigers built the lead back to 10 (74-64) with 1:01 left in the game, before the 49ers would chip away again. Donovan Morris scored seven points in the final minute, including a three-pointer with :11 seconds remaining to cut the Pacific lead to 79-77. Juniors Steffan Johnson (Kent, Wash.) and Anthony Brown (Sacramento, Calif.) each hit a pair of free throws to seal the victory.

Johnson had 19 points and had seven assists to lead six Tigers in double figures. Junior Michael Nunnally (Stockton, Calif.) had 14 points for Pacific. Brown and Troyer each scored 13 points. Junior Bryan LeDuc scored 11 points and added six rebounds, while sophomore Joe Ford (Altadena, Calif.) scored 10 second half points and added five offensive rebounds.

The Tigers shot 50.0% in the second half, hitting 13-of-26 shots from the field. The 49ers shot 58.3% from the field in the second half, hitting 14-of-24 field goal attempts. Pacific held a 33-27 advantage on the boards, including 14 offensive rebounds.

Morris led the 49ers with 32 points.
