Tigers Suffer First Conference Loss, 3-1 at Cal State Fullerton

Fullerton, Calif. - Despite one of their best offensive efforts of the young season, the Pacific women's volleyball team suffered a 3-1 loss to Cal State Fullerton on Saturday, Sept. 22.

The loss dropped the Tigers to 7-3 on the season and 1-1 in Big West Conference play. Cal State Fullerton, meanwhile, moved to 7-5 overall and 2-0 in conference.

Game scores for the match were: 27-30, 28-30, 30-16 and 24-30.

The first two games of the match were very similar as the Titans raced out to an early lead, only to see the Tigers pull take a one point lead near the midpoint. In each case, Cal State Fullerton used a short run and reclaim control the held off a late Pacific run to take a 2-0 lead into the break.

Cal State Fullerton executed very well in each game as the Titans posted 21 kills and just three errors in both games one and two for a .404 hitting percentage. The Tigers, meanwhile, had a combined 40 kills and nine errors on 91 swings for a .344 average.

Following the break, the Tigers hit the floor with a tremendous influx of energy defensively. Pacific's commitment to forcing Cal State Fullerton into more difficult positions worked to perfection as the Tigers forced the Titans into 10 errors in game three alone. The result was a Pacific landslide as the Tigers earned a 30-16 game three win.

Unfortunately for the Tigers, Cal State Fullerton was able to regain their composure in the fourth and decisive game as the Titans committed just two errors in game four. The turning point came when the two teams were tied at 9-9. Cal State Fullerton scored 10 of the next 11 points to take a 19-10 lead as Pacific committed five errors during the streak. The Tigers tried to mount a comeback as Pacific cut the lead to as little as four at 21-17, but couldn't battle all the way back as Pacific dropped the game, 30-24.

Freshman Svenja Engelhardt (Sinsheim, Germany) led the Tigers with career-highs of 23 kills and six aces. Junior Alexa Anderson (Los Gatos, Calif.) finished with 22 kills and 13 digs to complete her fifth double-double of the season. Junior setter Shannon Krug (Colorado Springs, Colo.) also notched a double-double with 60 assists and 11 digs.

Brittany Moore led Cal State Fullerton with 19 kills in the match.

The Tigers return to action on Friday, Sept. 28 as Pacific hosts UC Santa Barbara at 7 p.m. in the Alex G. Spanos Center.
