Tigers Fall to CS Fullerton 75-69

Fullerton, Calif. - The Pacific women's basketball team fell to Cal State Fullerton by the count of 75-69 in Big West Conference action on Thursday, February 8th at Titan Gym.

With the loss the Tigers fall to 8-16, 2-8 in the Big West, while the Titans improve to 11-12, 5-4 in Big West action.

Pacific shot 65.5 percent from the field in the first on 19-29 shooting from the field to take a 47-42 lead into the halftime break. Freshmen Emma Head (San Diego, Calif.) and Jake Kelly (Sacramento, Calif.) each posted 10 points apiece in a half that saw the Tigers lead by as many as six. Head was a perfect 5-of-5 shooting from the field in the half, while sophomore Karen Dawkins (Colorado Springs, Col.) posted nine first half points, including 4-of-5 from the field. Sophomore Whitney Price (Las Vegas, Nev.) added five first half assists as the Tigers posted 16 assists to just six turnovers.

The second half saw a reversal of fortune, as the Tigers scored just one field goal in the first 9:39 of the half, a layup by Emma Head, but continued to lead due to a 6-for-6 start at the foul line. Kelly made an athletic scoop to the hoop while being fouled with 10:21 remaining to make the score 57-53 Tigers, but missed the free throw. Five minutes later, the Tigers would make the lead five on another layup attempt and a foul, this time by Head, but again the free throw was missed to make the score 63-58 with 6:10 remaining in regulation.

Cal State Fullerton took advantage, going on a 9-0 run capped off by a three-pointer by Charlee Underwood which gave the Titans a four point advantage at 67-63 with 4:01 remaining. The Tigers fought back to pull to within one after a 1-of-2 effort from the line by Head and a putback jumper by senior Jerise Freeman (Wichita, Kansas), making the score 67-66 Titans with 2:59 to play. But the Tigers would get no closer as Tigers were outscored 8-3 the rest of the way to fall 75-69.

The Tigers were lead in scoring by Head, who scored 16 points off the bench, and was one of four Pacific players in double figures. Kelly added 14 points, while Freeman and Dawkins added 13 and 11 respectively. Price ended the game with a near triple double, scoring eight points, while securing 11 rebounds and adding six assists.

Pacific was held to 30 percent shooting in half number two, shooting just 6-of-20 while missing all six three point attempts. For the game, the Tigers still posted a 51 percent shooting percentage, while hitting 15-of-20 from the foul stripe.

The Titans were led by Underwood, who posted a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds. The Big West's leading scoring, Toni Thomas, ended with 15 points, after being held to just three first half points. Dayana Frias also added 15 points for the Titans, who shot 44.6 percent from the field for the game.

Pacific hopes to rebound as they travel to Big West leading UC Riverside on Saturday, February 10th at 5:00p.m.
