Tigers Fall At Home To UC Irvine, 62-54

Stockton, Calif. - The Pacific women's basketball team dropped a 62-54 contest to UC Irvine in Big West Conference action on Thursday, February 1. The loss dropped the Tigers to 7-15 overall and 1-7 in Big West action while the Anteaters improved to 6-16 overall and 3-5 in the conference.

The Tigers got off to a fast start against the Anteaters in the second meeting between the two teams as Pacific opened up a five point lead in the first five minutes of the game as they took a 13-8 lead. Four different players scored for the Tigers throughout the opening minutes, however, as the Tigers posted a balanced attack throughout the first half, the Anteaters countered with a solo performance out of Angie Ned as the senior guard posted 24 first half points to lead the UC Irvine to the 31-26 halftime lead. In addition to her scoring, Ned added 10 rebound in the opening half to post the double-double through the first 20 minutes of the game.

Out of the locker room, the Tigers again took control of the game scoring the first eight points of the half to take a three point lead at 34-31 with 18-04 remaining in the game. Pacific's 8-0 run came primarily from the outside as both freshman Jake Kelly (Sacramento, Calif.) and senior Jerise Freeman (Wichita, Kan.) hit from distance for two of the Tigers' four three pointers in the game.

For the next 15 minutes neither team was able to put any distance in between themselves and their opponent as the largest lead during the stretch was just a six point led held by the Anteaters at the 6:55 mark in the game. Down six, the Tigers were able to rally with three unanswered buckets the Tigers evened the score for the final time at 54-54 with 3:21 remaining in the game. With either team having the opportunity to take control of the contest for the final three minutes, the Anteaters rose to the call as the scored the final eight points of the game to seal the win.

The Tigers were led on the night by sophomore Karen Dawkins (Colorado Springs, Colo.) who scored 14 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to post her eighth double-double of the season. Eight of her points came in the second half of the contest. Behind Dawkins, Freeman posted a team-high 15 points on 6-of-12 shooting before fouling out of the contest late in the second half. Rounding out the double digit scoring for the Tigers was Kelly who posted 12 points as she broke through the 10 point barrier for the first time in five contests.

For the Anteaters, Ned led the way with a game-high 29 points as she was held to just five points in the second half. Ned was 7-of-17 from the field and 12-of-14 from the line in the contest. Celebrating her birthday, Ned also added 12 rebounds in the game. The only other play to hit double-digits for UC Irvine was Stephanie Duda who finished the game with 15 points and 11 rebounds.

The Tigers will again be in action on Saturday, February 3 as they play host to Long Beach State in Big West Conference action. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
