Dec. 8, 2007

Box Score

Stockton, Calif. - The Pacific women's basketball team fell in another close contest, this time to the visiting Broncos of Santa Clara, 71-64, on Saturday, December 8. The loss was the fourth consecutive loss for the Tigers and dropped them to 3-5 on the season while the Broncos improved to 6-3 on the year.

Tied at 50-50 with 11:20 to play in the game, the Tigers offense came to a screeching halt as the Broncos were able to use a 13-0 run over a nine minute span to pull away from Pacific. During the decisive stretch run the Tigers went 0-for-8 from the floor and 0-for-1 from the line. The Broncos relied on the hot hand of Sara Majors who posted seven of Santa Clara's 13 points during the nine minute stretch. She would finish the game with a game-high 17 points on 5-of-7 shooting.

Up until the 11:20 mark in the second half the game was tight with neither team holding more than a six point advantage on their opponent. The Broncos took a four point lead into the halftime break. Despite the close game, the Tigers never led in the second half, but knotted the score twice in the second half before the Broncos pulled away in what would amount to the fourth quarter of action.

Freshman Jennifer Fath (Carrollton, Texas) led the way for the Tigers throughout the second half as she posted a career-high 13 points in the loss, nine of which came in the final 20 minutes of action. Fath's pair of free throw with 2:30 to play in the contest ended the Tigers' nine minute scoreless drought, but her play in the second half was not enough to keep the Tigers' in the game. She finished the game a perfect 3-of-3 from the floor while hitting 7-of-9 free throw attempts.

Joining Fath in the double digit scoring column for Pacific was sophomore Jake Kelly (Fair Oaks, Calif.) who netted a team-best 14 points in the game. Kelly also added two assists and a single block for the Tigers. Juniors Janae Young (Sacramento, Calif.) and Karen Dawkins (Colorado Springs, Colo.) would each hit double figures as Young scored 11 points while Dawkins added 10. The 10 points marked the second straight game Dawkins has reached the 10+ point mark in just her fourth game back from injury. Young added seven rebounds for Pacific while junior Whitney Price (Las Vegas, Nev.) led all rebounders with nine boards.

On the other side of the court, Jen Gottschalk, the Broncos' leading scorer coming into the game, posted 15 points in the contest alongside of Majors. Elizabeth Majors added 11 points while Candice Cronk scored 10 in the win.

The Tigers shot 46.8% from the floor in the contest, but 28 turnovers and 47.2% shooting by Santa Clara led to the seven point loss for Pacific. The Tigers outrebounded the Broncos 33-to-29 in the contest.

Pacific will be back in action on Tuesday, Dec. 11 as they travel to Sacramento, Calif. to take on the Hornets of Sacramento State. The game is scheduled for 7:05 pm.
