Davis, Calif. - Playing their final game of the 2007 season the Pacific soccer team went out with a win as they defeated the Aggies of UC Davis, 2-0, on Sunday, November 4. With the win the Tigers finished the year with a 7-7-4 overall record and a 2-4-2 conference record while the Aggies dropped to 6-12-0 overall and 1-7-0 in Big West play.
Senior Carla Vellutini (Elk Grove, Calif.) and junior Andrea Carrara (Belmont, Calif.) each scored a goal in the second half while senior Jaime Souza (Gig Harbor, Wash.) posted her 22nd and final career shutout to push Pacific to the victory.
After a slow start that saw both teams combine for just five shots in the first half, the Tigers picked up the pace and the pressure in the second half. In the final 45:00 minutes of action, Pacific posted 10 shots to the Aggies five, while hitting pay dirt twice.
In addition to a shot advantage the Tigers also held the advantage in corner kicks on the day (7-4) as they put to good use the free play opportunities in the 60th minute of the match when Carrara got her head on a ball played into the box by junior Laura King (Livermore, Calif.). Carrara's header strike was her first goal of the season and broke the scoreless tie. Additionally, the goal marked the first goal for Pacific since scoring against UC Riverside on October 12 breaking a four game scoreless streak for the Tigers.
Just under 10 minutes later, Pacific added an insurance goal on a shot from Vellutini in the 69th minute as she tapped home her fourth goal of the season off of an assist from senior Mandi Van Dorn (Danville, Calif.).
Up two goals, the defense for the Tigers was able to sit back and hold the Aggies off the scoreboard to earn their eighth shutout of the season. Souza was not tested often as she made just two saves on the day.
Pacific's win over UC Davis broke a three game losing streak against the Aggies after the Tigers had lost the previous three meetings by identical 1-0 scores. In addition, the win marked the first time in eight seasons the Tigers finished a season with a win after falling in their season finales the previous seven seasons.
