Tigers Defeat UC Riverside in Three

Riverside, Calif. - The Pacific women's volleyball team improved to 10-4 on the season and 4-2 in the Big West Conference with a 3-0 win at UC Riverside on Saturday, Oct. 6. The Highlanders fell to 5-11 (1-4 BWC) with the 30-17, 30-23, 30-25 victory.

The Tigers raced to an early 7-3 lead in game one, scoring five straight points on the service of senior Julie Magud (Stockton, Calif.), who served two aces in that stretch. Another five point run served by senior Johanna Hilbers (Omaha, Neb.) gave Pacific a 15-7 lead and the Tigers' lead did not fall below eight points the rest of the way. Junior Kara Uhl (Cypress, Calif) had two kills in the run. The Tigers out-hit the Highlanders .425-.152 in the first game.

In game two, the Highlanders took a 13-10 lead, before the Tigers scored nine of the next 10 points to take a 19-14 lead. UC Riverside rallied back to cut the Tiger lead to 22-20, but the Tigers outscored the Highlanders 8-3 to finish game two. Sophomore Dancyne Kama (Hilo, Hawaii) served the final four points for the Tigers, including an ace to finish off the game.

Game three was a bit more back and forth, with the Tigers and Highlanders battling to six ties and three lead changes. Pacific took the lead for the final time at 15-14, but the Highlanders would keep it close. After a tie at 14-14, the Tigers scored six of the next eight points to take a 20-16 lead. The Highlanders cut the lead to 24-23 and Pacific used a timeout. Coming out of the timeout, the Tigers got two kills from Hilbers and scored six of the final eight points to take the game 30-25.

Freshman Svenja Engelhardt (Sinsheim, Germany) led the Tigers with 14 kills and 10 digs. Hilbers had 13 kills and a team-best five blocks, while hitting .632. Junior Alexa Anderson (Los Gatos, Calif.) added 12 kills for the Tigers.

The Tigers out-dug UCR 55-33, and out-hit the Highlanders .350-.184 for the match.

Angie Mitchell led the Highlanders with 13 kills.

Pacific is next in action on Friday, Oct. 12 with a 7:00 p.m. match against Long Beach State in the Alex G. Spanos Center.
