San Luis Obispo, Calif. - For the fourth time in seven Big West Conference contests the Pacific soccer team played a double overtime game, this time falling 1-0 to Cal Poly on Sunday, October 28. With the loss the Tigers fell below .500 to 6-7-4 overall and 1-4-2 in conference action while the Mustangs improved to 7-8-1 overall, 5-1-0 in the Big West, with their sixth consecutive victory. The loss officially eliminated Pacific from post-season contention.
For the second time in as many games, 100:00 minutes was not enough to decide a victor as the Tigers were able to hold off the Mustangs through regulation and the first overtime. However, Cal Poly's constant attack finally broke through two minutes into the second overtime on a goal by Sharon Day.
Day took a pass on the left, dribbled into the box and drove a shot on the ground to the right, just out of the reach of senior Jaime Souza (Gig Harbor, Wash.). The ball hit the inside of the post and deflected into the net. Before that goal, Souza was having a career day as she was credited with 16 saves in the contest.
Offensively, senior Mandi Van Dorn (Danville, Calif.) led the way for the Tigers with three shots, two of which were on frame. The Mustangs held an 11-2 advantage in corner kicks in the contest while tallying 35 shots throughout the contest.
The 1-0 loss marked the fourth consecutive game in which the Tigers have been held scoreless. Cal Poly has now won five of the previous six meetings between the two teams with both teams playing to a draw in 2004.
Pacific will close out the 2007 season on Sunday, November 4, as they travel to Davis, Calif. to take on the Aggies of UC Davis. The game is scheduled for 12:00 pm.
