The Pacific men's basketball team dropped a 76-70 decision at Cal State Fullerton on Saturday, Jan. 6 in Titan Gym. With the loss, the Tigers fell to 5-10 on the season and 2-1 in the Big West Conference. Cal State Fullerton improved to to 12-3 and 3-1 in league play.
The Tigers used a 6-1 run at the end of the first half to cut the Titans lead to 34-23, after the Titans had used a 15-3 run to take a game-high 16 point lead with 4:14 left in the first half.
Pacific shot just 33.3% from the field in the first half and had 12 turnovers.
The Tigers opened the second half with a 14-4 run, cutting the Titans lead to 38-37 with 16:12 left in the game. After Cal State Fullerton pushed the lead back to nine (55-46), Pacific again battled back with a 7-0 run to cut the lead to 55-53 with 6:06 remaining. The Titans hit three three-pointers in a 13-1 run that gave Cal State Fullerton a 68-54 lead with 2:16 left.
A furious Tiger rally in the final two minutes of the game brought the Tigers to within four points (74-70) with 12 seconds left. A steal of an inbounds pass gave Pacific another chance but sophomore Steffan Johnson's (Kent, Wash.) three-pointer hit the back iron and the Titans hit two free throws to seal the victory.
The Tigers were led by sophomore Anthony Brown (Sacramento, Calif.), who had 16 points and 10 rebounds for his fifth double-double of the season. Senior Reggie Vezia (Vacaville, Calif.) scored a career-high 14 points, while senior Anthony Esparza (Bakersfield, Calif.) added 12 points.
Bobby Brown led the Titans with 21 points.
Pacific is next in action with a home game against UC Irvine on Saturday, Jan. 13. Game time is 7:30 p.m. for the CSTV telecast.
