Pacific Cruises Past Cal Poly, 66-43

Senior Anthony Esparza recorded a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds as the Pacific men's basketball team earned a 66-43 Big West Conference victory over Cal Poly on Thursday, Jan. 25, at the Alex G. Spanos Center.

The Tigers got out to a 14-6 lead in the first half, but the Mustangs used a 10-1 run over the next seven minutes to take a 16-15 lead. Pacific then outscored Cal Poly 11-5 over the final 6:30 to take a 26-19 lead at halftime. Senior Wolfgang Raffety (Placerville, Calif.) scored all five of his points in the Tigers' final run of the first half.

Cal Poly opened up the second half by scoring the first four points, but Pacific responded with a 10-0 run to take a 36-23 with 13:12 left in the game. The Tigers' lead would not fall below double digits the rest of the game. The 23-point victory was the largest of the year for Pacific.

Esparza (Bakersfield, Calif.) led the Tigers with his third career and first double-double of the season. Sophomore Anthony Brown (Sacramento, Calif.), junior Solomon Horsechief (Muskogee, Okla.) and senior Michael White (Capitola, Calif.) each added 12 points for the Tigers.

The Tigers hit just 42.9% of their shots from the field overall, but were 55.6% (20-36) from inside the three-point line. Pacific was just 4-of-20 from three point range.

Chaz Thomas had 12 points to lead the Mustangs. Pacific held the Mustangs to 39.0% shooting from the field.

The Tigers are next in action with a home game against UC Santa Barbara on Saturday, Jan. 27 in the Alex G. Spanos Center. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
